How Old is your church?

6/29/2016

This is from a tract, and was printed in the Truth In Love publication Vol 7, No 3, March 2014.
If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, and ex-monk of the Catholic Chruch, in the year 1517.
If you belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534, because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry.
If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Know in Scotland in the year 1560.
If you are a Congregationalist, your relgion was orginated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.
If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1605.
If you are of the Dutch Reformend church, you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he orginiated your religion in New Your in 1628.
If you are a protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Seabury in the Americian colonies in the 17th century.
If you are a Methodist, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.
If you are a Unitarian, Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.
If you are a Morman (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, N.Y. in 1829.
If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.
If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.
If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as “Church of the Nazarene,” “Penecostal Gospel,” Holiness Church,” “Pilgram Holiness Chruch,” “Jehovah’s Witnesses,” your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past one hundred years.
If you are a Roman Catholic, you know that your religion was founded in the year 33  Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and it is still the same Chruch”
This information was published by the Cathoic Truth Publication.  The name of the author was not printed on the copy we got.    David Bonner, Editor of  The Truth In Lovepublication.
In the bulletin the following comments were made about this publication.
THINGS THAT AMAZE ME IN THE ARTICLE
  1. First, all the things gotten right about so many demoninations.  Amazing!
  2. Second, stating the Roman Catholic church was founded in 33 AD.  The church you read about in the book of Acts (2) was founded in Acts 33 AD.  It was NOT called the “Catholic Church,” but local churches were called “chruches of Christ.” Rom. 16:16.  How could they miss it?
  3. Historically, Jesus said “I will build my church” (Mt. 16:18), and His church did come into existence in 33 AD in Jerusalem.  And, as Jesus had said, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” Mk. 16:15-16.  There is good evidence they did a good job of doing it.
IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST TODAY THAT OF THE BIBLE?
When we say, “church of Christ,” we know that many “churches” have gone far from the truth.  There are many different kins of “chruches of Christ.”  Some it seems really do follow the Bible with Book, Chapter, and Verse.  Still many are getting pretty loose as to what they teach and practice.
In order to be a church like the Bible, we need to follow the Bible in all we teach and practice.   We need to uphold the moral standard of the Bible also.  In the 1800’s most “chruches of Christ” went away from the truth.  This is how the “Christian Churches” got started.  In came mechanical music in worship and a host of other things.  Every local chruch today needs to realize IT is independent with the Bible as the guide, and follow it.   It is  wonderful churches are independent so if any one goes away from the truth, no other church has to.  Ye, many churches influence other local chruches, but each local church needs to follow the Bible for itself and stay faithful to the word of God.  WE just need to remember the Bible is our standard.
MORE ON HOW OLD IS THE CHRUCH OF CHRIST?
In about 33 AD the chruch of Christ came into existence in Acts 2.  It grew fast to where Col 1:23 states “If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and WHICH WAS PREACHED TO EVERY CREATURE WHIS IS UNDER HEAVEN; whereof I Paul am made a minister.”  Emphasis mine DB  It is wonderful to think that all at one time all on earht had opportunity to hear the gospel and obey it.  We need to work as hard as we can to preach the gospel that way today.
From 33 AD many have heard the gospel and many local chruches have existed, yet many have fallen away also.  It should be the desire of Christian to do all he can to spread the gospel far and wide so all in our day can have the opporunity to hear and obey the gospel.  The word “GOSPEL” organinally meant a reward for good news, then later it meant the good news itself.  In Rom 1:16 Paul stated, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ.”  How could anyone be ashamed of such good news as the saving Gospel.  Yet, many do not want to hear it.  But for the save, we all enjoy attending gospel meetings where it is preached.  How wonderful to think about heaven and the good life that gets us there.

WHO STARTED THE CHURCH OF CHRIST?

6/27/2016

The answer may surprise those who think of the church of the Lord in terms of a denomination, or as a conglomerate of disparate groups claiming to be parts of “the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Most denominations trace their origin to the work of some notable person – sometimes they are even named to honor their founder. Some think of the church of Christ as a predominantly American “denomination” with its origin and roots in the works of Thomas and Alexander Campbell, men who came to the United States from Britain in the early 1800’s. Of course we know, or should know that the Campbells and many others of that time were intent on simply returning to the New Testament pattern, initiated by Christ and implemented by his apostles. They wanted to become part of the historic people called together by the Lord and added to each time any person obeyed the commands of Christ and met his requirements for inclusion in his spiritual family (see Mark 16:15-16, Acts 2:38, 1 Cor. 12:13, Col. 2:11-12 and 1:13-18). They never intended to start something new, but only to become proper parts of something that had existed since the day of Pentecost after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Others had announced the same desire and intention before them and many have espoused the same principle since their time.
Documentary research done by a Dr. Robinson of Birmingham, England revealed the following: “In the Furness District of Lancashire, in England, there existed in 1669, during the reign of King Charles II, a group of eight churches of Christ, most of them not now in existence. An old minute-book has been found for the year 1669, and it shows that they called themselves by the name Church of Christ, practiced baptism by immersion, celebrated the Lord’s supper each Sunday, and had elders and deacons in each congregation. There was also a church of Christ in Dungannon, Ireland in 1804, and one in Allington, Deighshire. In 1735 John Davis, a young preacher from the Fife District in Scotland, was preaching simple New Testament Christianity some twenty five years from Thomas Campbell (Alexander’s father) was born.” We do not include this information here to show that the church of Christ started earlier than the 1800’s in America – we repudiate the whole idea that the church acknowledged and validated by Christ could have been started by anyone other than Christ himself, as warranted in the New Testament writings.
The church of the Lord existed long before 17th century England or 19th century America. It was predicted some five hundred years before Christ (Dan. 2:44), was promised by Jesus (Mt. 16:18), began and was announced as existing on the day of Pentecost, with the saved being added into it (Acts 2:41, 47). It has continued to exist without change since that day, with the only variable being those being saved by obedience to Christ and his gospel and assembling in various places as his people (Rom. 16:16, Gal. 1:1-2, etc). Whenever and wherever people obey the simple gospel message of the New Testament, the plan of salvation validated by Christ and implemented by his apostles, those people become part of the one true church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Even if for some period of time – even centuries – there were no living members of the Lord’s spiritual body, the body itself would continue. It would become a visible presence on earth again whenever the gospel was returned to and obeyed, in any place and at any time.
It is difficult to verify the existence of true Christians and congregations of true Christians in some periods of history. Much of church history is dominated by corrupt and unscriptural institutions claiming to be the church or parts of it. They suppress the truth of the Lord as given in his word, and promote themselves by denying the validity of anything other than themselves. They are believed by misguided people who believe that somehow the number of adherents proves the validity of the group. But multiplied millions of members of an unscriptural group will not make it valid, nor will they win for themselves the approval and acceptance of God (Mt. 7:21-28).
Of one thing we are certain: the church of Christ was not started in the United States by the Campbells, or by anybody else. The movement in which the Campbells and many others took the lead in America was simply one of many historical efforts to reform existing churches and restore the New Testament pattern for the church. To be sure that we are in the church of the Lord we must verify our own salvation, as set forth in the scripture (remember only those He saves are added by Him to His church). We must verify it by the scripture, not by the teachings of any reformer or restorer, not by the words of any modern day preacher, and not by any denominated group large or small that is not identified in the New Testament of God’s Word.

Some Reasons Why It Is Wrong For the Church to Furnish Entertainment

6/22/2016

Donald Townsley
Shepherdsville, Kentucky
1. It is Not the Mission of the Church to Entertain Saints or Sinners. (By “entertainment” we mean eating together, fun and games.)
a. Jesus did not come to earth to “seek to entertain,” but “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10).
b. The gospel is not God’s “power to entertain,” but “the power of God unto salvation” (Rom. 1:16).
c. The church is not the “support of entertainment,” but the ‘~Pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15).
d. The mission of the church in the world is to preach the gospel to the lost (1 Tim. 3:15; Phil. 1:5; 4:14-17; Mk. 16:1516); to edify its members (Eph.  4:11-12); and to minister to its own in time of need (Acts 2:44-45; 4:32; 6:1-6; 1 Cor. 16:1-2; Rom. 15:25-27; Acts 11:27-30; 1 Tim. 5:16)
2.   It is not scriptural for the church to furnish entertainment, for no Scripture authorizes it.
a. We must respect the silence of the Scriptures (1 Pet. 4:11; 2 Jn. 9-11).
b. The idea that we can do something because it is not expressly forbidden in the Scriptures creates respect for what the Bible does not say, rather than what it does say!
c. When one’s action in religion is governed on the assumption that he can do what is not expressly forbidden, the door is wide open! Through this door comes instrumental music in worship, praying through Mary, baptizing babies, ad infinitum!
d. John said, “If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book” (Rev. 22:18).
e. Paul said “not to think of men above that which is written” (1 Cor. 4:6).
3 . Entertainment is not “church business”; it is home or family business (the church does have business – Acts 6:3).
a. Paul tells the Corinthians that they had houses to eat and drink in: “What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I praise you not ” (1 Cor. 11: 34).
b. Disciples in Jerusalem ate at home: “Breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart” (Acts 2:46, ASV).
c. From these passages we learn this truth: Christians have houses to eat and drink in: the social aspect of life is family business and God does not want the social business of the family mixed with the spiritual business of the church.
d. It is the social business of the home to “wash feet” – show hospitality (1 Tim. 5:10). We have pointed out to our Baptist friends who want to make “foot-washing” church business, that it is not church business but the business of the home to show hospitality. “Foot washing” is in the realm of the social and should not be mixed with the spiritual, just as entertainment is in the realm of the social and should not be mixed with the spiritual.
4. For the church to furnish entertainment is to put no difference between the holy and the common, the sacred and the secular.
a. God has always made a difference between the holy and the common. Ezekiel 22:26: “Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned my holy things: they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them” (ASV).
b. Entertainment is not authorized in the New Testament which is sealed with the blood of Christ (Matt. 26:28; Heb. 9:23-28), therefore it is common and cannot be a part of the work or worship of the church with God’s approval. All things used in God’s service must come under the blood of Christ.
5. It leads away from spirituality by substituting “food for the stomach” for food for the soul: music and laughter for meditation and prayer.
a. Philippians 3:19: “Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.”
b. The kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom, not carnal in nature, and does not appeal to the fleshly appetite (Rom. 14:17; Jn. 18:36).
6. The Bible term “fellowship” is never used in reference to entertainment.
a. The Bible does not teach just any kind of “fellowship”: the term is limited to what the Bible teaches about it.
b. Bible fellowship is based upon gospel teaching (1 Jn. 1:3-4,7).
c. It is fellowship men enjoy with one another and with God because Jesus died, and which would have been impossible without his death. Jesus did not die to bring men and women together to drink coffee and eat doughnuts (or hamburgers)!
d. Jesus’ death brings men and women together in fellowship in song (Eph. 5:19); in fellowship in prayer (Acts 2:42); in fellowship in the support of gospel preachers (Phil. 1:5; 4:14-17); in fellowship in suffering for the cause of Christ (Phil. 3:10); in fellowship in the harmony that exists among members of the church one with another (1 Cor. 12:1827); in fellowship with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit (1 Jn. 1:3,7; Phil. 2:1), and in fellowship of the ministering to the saints in need (2 Cor. 8:4; 9:13; Rom. 15:26).
7. Church-furnished entertainment is denominational in origin, and has not added to their (the denomination’s) growth.
a. The following is from an article by Connie W. Adams in which he quotes from a Baptist paper published in Florida: “Not in sixteen years have the number of baptisms in Texas sunk to such a low. There are 4,000 Baptist churches in the great state of Texas. Last year these 4,000 churches baptized 53,956. This was the lowest number since 1949. This was less than 14 baptisms for each church. . . It take(s) one Texas Baptist 12,045 days to win one soul.” “The secret of soul-winning is following Jesus. Maybe it would not be out of order for Texas Baptists – along with all Southern Baptists – to stop cooking in our church kitchens; stop playing in our athletic buildings; and call for an oldfashioned prayer meeting . . . Get back to God; back to the Bible. On fire with . . . real love in our hearts for lost souls. Maybe this is the answer.”
b. A church that furnishes entertainment cannot claim to be undenominational in practice when it does that which is denominational in origin.
8. Church-furnished entertainment was opposed by gospel preachers in terms nobody misunderstood forty years ago. B.C. Goospasture, in an editorial in the Gospel Advocate (May 20, 1948) said, “It is not the mission of the church to furnish amusement for the world or even for its own members.” “The church would come off a poor second if it undertook to compete with institutions established for the express purpose of entertaining people.” “Only as the church becomes worldly, as it pillows its head on the lap of Delilah, will it want to turn from its wonted course to relatively unimportant matters.”

TOP FIVE EVERYDAY EVANGELISM TIP

6/22/2016

  1. Look at other people as those for whom Jesus died.
  2. Pray for three specific people by name every day, asking God to use you to draw them to Christ.
  3. Tell people how being a Christian gives your life meaning and purpose.
  4. Build friendships with non-Christians. Watch for opportunities to help them and their families.
  5. God is the great evangelist. You only sow the seeds, but He makes them grow. Do what you can to tell others. God will bring the harvest, for He has promised that His Word will not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11).
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” 1 Peter 3:15
